In the early morning hours of Wednesday, December 24, 2025, a violent incident occurred in Jonesboro, Arkansas, disrupting the quiet of the holiday. Officers from the Jonesboro Police Department were dispatched to the 300 block of State Street around 3:19 a.m. following a distress call from a female resident. The caller reported that an intruder had entered a property behind her home and shot a man. Upon arriving at the scene, law enforcement discovered the victim, identified as Michael Tatum, a 58-year-old male, lying on the ground and suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.

Responding Officer Greg Trout found Tatum conscious but in significant distress, verbalizing that he was unable to breathe. An examination revealed that he had sustained a gunshot wound to the left side of his abdomen and another injury to the right side of his body near the shoulder. Officer Trout administered immediate aid by applying chest seals to the wounds while awaiting emergency medical services. Tatum was subsequently transported to a local hospital for urgent care, but despite the efforts of medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 4:12 a.m.

Authorities quickly launched a homicide investigation, which led to the identification and apprehension of a suspect. Mario Jashon Stafford, a 29-year-old resident of Jonesboro, was arrested in connection with the fatal shooting. The investigation indicated that the incident was a residential burglary turned violent, alleging that Stafford entered Tatum's residence and committed the shooting. Stafford was taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder, aggravated residential burglary, and a parole violation. A temporary bond was set at $1 million as he was held at the Craighead County Sheriff's Department.

Court records revealed that this was not Stafford's first encounter with the legal system regarding serious violent crimes. He had previously been arrested in 2015 on capital murder and aggravated residential burglary charges involving the death of a woman, but those charges were eventually dropped due to insufficient evidence and witness identification issues. Following the death of Michael Tatum, Police Chief Rick Elliott noted that while a suspect was in custody, the investigation remained active, with authorities not ruling out the possibility that other individuals may have been involved in the crime.
