On the evening of Christmas Eve in Poulan, Georgia, a tragic event unfolded that resulted in the death of 45-year-old George Christopher Cummings. The incident, a shooting, occurred at approximately 8 p.m. at a residence located in the 200 block of Melanie Lane. Following the shooting, Cummings was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Cummings was a family man who cherished spending time with his wife and children and considered his home with them to be his favorite place in the world.
The Poulan Police Department promptly began an investigation and requested the assistance of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. The investigation led to the arrest of a suspect, 36-year-old William Travis Yerby of Poulan, on December 25, 2025. Yerby was taken into custody and has since been charged with felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. He was booked into the Dougherty County Jail by the Worth County Sheriff's Office.
As the legal process moves forward, an autopsy for George Christopher Cummings is scheduled to be performed at the GBI Central Lab. The case against William Travis Yerby will be handed over to the Tift Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office for prosecution once the investigation is complete.
