In the summer of 2019, the life of a young man from Sardis, Georgia, was tragically cut short. On the night of June 23rd, 16-year-old Tybralyn Kelly was on North Hill Street when he was shot in the back. First responders found that he had been fired upon three times. Kelly, a male, was rushed to Burke Medical Center and later transferred to Augusta University Medical Center, but he succumbed to his injuries and passed away.
The investigation into the shooting moved swiftly.
By the following morning, the Burke County Sheriff's Office had a suspect in custody: 17-year-old Malik Harris, who was also a resident of Sardis. Harris was subsequently charged with murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. The authorities began to piece together the events of that fatal night, delving into a case that would highlight ongoing tensions in the community.
The case against Malik Harris eventually went to trial. In a significant turn of events, a jury acquitted Harris of the murder of Tybralyn Kelly. The tragic death of Kelly was later mentioned in the context of a separate murder trial, where it was revealed that the killing of another young man was believed to be a revenge killing related to Kelly's death. This connection pointed to a larger narrative of feuding groups in the Waynesboro and Sardis areas. Despite these associations, it was noted that neither Tybralyn Kelly nor the victim in the subsequent case were themselves gang members.
