Josiah Villarreal Madrid was a 17-year-old Hispanic/Latino male who was fatally shot early on the morning of Wednesday, November 26, 2025, in the 1700 block of Marshall Avenue in Evansville, Indiana. According to local officials, the Vanderburgh County Coroner later identified him and confirmed that he died as a result of gunshot wounds sustained during the incident, and noted that he was from nearby Henderson.
The shooting happened just after dawn in a residential area, shocking both Evansville and Henderson communities as word spread that a teenager had been killed and two other young people wounded in the same burst of violence.
Evansville Police say dispatchers received calls around 5:30–5:35 a.m. reporting a possible gunshot victim in the 1700 block of Marshall Avenue. Callers described hearing roughly 10 to 12 shots and seeing people fleeing the area on foot. When officers arrived, they found three victims: one inside a car that had been struck multiple times by gunfire, with a side window shot out, and two others outside the vehicle. Madrid was pronounced dead at the scene, while two surviving victims—reported as an 18-year-old and a 15-year-old—were transported to a local hospital, where their injuries were described as non-life-threatening.
Investigators immediately began a large-scale search of the surrounding neighborhood. Police established a wide perimeter and brought in K9 teams to try to track anyone who might have fled after the shooting, while also deploying drones to scan the area from above for possible evidence or suspects. Officers later explained that the cold temperatures and gusty winds that morning made it harder for K9s to follow scent trails, so using aerial technology and expanding the search zone were key to covering as much ground as possible. Both surviving victims were said to be cooperating with detectives, providing information to help piece together what happened and whether the attack was targeted or random.
As of the latest public reporting, Evansville Police have not announced any arrests in connection with the shooting and have not released the names or detailed descriptions of any suspects. Investigators have said only that they were using all available tools to identify those responsible and that they had not yet publicly confirmed a motive or whether the victims were specifically targeted.
