Remembered by his family as a funny, kind, and supportive man who was a father figure to many, his sudden death left his loved ones reeling. His nieces described him as someone who was always there for his family and who treated strangers as friends he hadn't yet met.
The tragic events unfolded inside a home in the 1700 block of
Union Street on the city's near south side. Just before 1 p.m., police responded to a report of a shooting and found both Jason Griffin and a woman with gunshot wounds. Both were transported to a local hospital, where Griffin, who was in critical condition, later died from his injuries. The female victim was reported to be in serious but stable condition. Investigators with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department quickly determined that the shooting was an isolated incident, as all individuals involved were acquainted.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police arrested 64-year-old Chandron Clark in connection with the double shooting. According to court documents, the female victim, who was Clark's roommate, told detectives that she and Griffin were sleeping when Clark entered her bedroom, smiled at her, and then shot her. When Griffin woke up, Clark allegedly shot him two or three times. The woman told police she believed Clark was jealous of her new relationship with Griffin, stating Clark was 'really obsessed' with her and had been primarily aiming for Griffin.
Following the shooting, Clark reportedly told police that Griffin and the woman 'had to become casualties because they didn't fit his plan of what a perfect society should be.' He also claimed to have intended to take his own life, but the gun misfired. The Marion County Prosecutor's Office formally charged Clark with murder and attempted murder. He was subsequently booked at the Criminal Justice Campus. The case was then set to proceed through the judicial system.
