A dispute between neighbors over a homeowners association escalated into a double homicide in Port St. Lucie, claiming the life of 75-year-old David Walter Gasik. The incident, which also resulted in the death of Mark Douglas Golden, age 54, stemmed from ongoing tensions with a fellow resident.
The suspect, Paul Maraio, had a history of confrontations with his neighbors. Police had been called to one of the victim's homes on three separate occasions due to harassment and verbal threats from Maraio. In the months leading up to the shooting, Maraio had been seen looking into the victim's home with binoculars and had made a threatening gesture. The homeowners association had reportedly sent Maraio an eviction letter just weeks before the fatal encounter.
On the day of the incident, Maraio fatally shot both Gasik and Golden. Following the shootings, he took a woman hostage in her home at gunpoint for two hours before police were able to intervene. After negotiations with law enforcement, the suspect died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
