Jonathan Somoano, a 26-year-old male, was fatally shot on May 13, 2025, in Port Saint Lucie, Florida. The incident occurred in the driveway of a residence on Southeast Bolton Avenue. Authorities responded to a 911 call reporting a body lying in the driveway, and upon arrival, officers heard additional gunshots. They discovered Somoano with a gunshot wound to the chest and attempted lifesaving measures before transporting him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
The investigation revealed that Somoano had been living with two other men, including 43-year-old Justin Hobel, at a residence on Southeast Bolton Avenue. Reports indicate that the three roommates had not slept for two to three days, and Hobel had become increasingly agitated. Prior to the shooting, Hobel allegedly handcuffed the other roommate, a 25-year-old male, and physically assaulted him while making threats. Somoano managed to escape and sought help from a neighbor, asking them to call 911 because his roommate was "acting crazy." However, the neighbor shut the door, and moments later, gunshots were heard outside. Somoano was shot in the neighbor's driveway.
Following the shooting, Hobel attempted to enter the neighbor's home but was unsuccessful. He then returned to his residence and forced the handcuffed roommate outside at gunpoint, continuing to assault him. A witness driving by saw the attack, yelled at Hobel to stop, and began recording the incident. The witness reported that Hobel accused the handcuffed man of being an "Algerian spy." The handcuffed roommate used the distraction to flee, prompting Hobel to fire several shots at him as he ran away. Law enforcement arrived shortly thereafter and took Hobel into custody.
Hobel was charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and false imprisonment. He is currently being held at the St. Lucie County Jail without bond. Authorities have stated that there is no ongoing threat to the public. The investigation remains active as officials continue to gather evidence and interview witnesses.
