In the early hours of a Tuesday morning in Newport News, Virginia, the life of 19-year-old Nevaeh Harris was tragically cut short. On November 11, 2025, police responded to a call about a shooting at the Brennon Pointe Apartments on Warwick Boulevard around 1:35 a.m. Inside one of the homes, they discovered Harris suffering from a gunshot wound; she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the young woman's death quickly focused on 21-year-old Kanye Smith, also of Newport News. Just two days later, on November 13, Smith presented himself to the Newport News Police Headquarters to provide a statement. Following his interview with detectives, he was arrested and charged in connection with Harris's death. The charges brought against him were severe: second-degree murder, discharging a firearm in an occupied building, and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
Court documents begin to tell a story of a volatile relationship that ended in tragedy. Both Smith and his mother, in separate interviews with police, stated that he and Harris had been arguing. According to Smith's mother, Harris was attempting to leave the apartment with her two sons when she allegedly charged at Smith with a knife. The mother then heard a gunshot, saw Harris fall, and witnessed her son flee the apartment with a gun. Smith's own account to detectives portrayed the shooting as an accident. He claimed that Harris had grabbed the gun and that it discharged accidentally as he tried to take it from her, with his finger on the trigger. However, investigators have noted that this account is inconsistent with the nature of Harris's wounds. The weapon used in the shooting has not yet been recovered. The investigation also revealed a history of domestic trouble, with records showing that Smith had been arrested for domestic assault against Harris in April of the same year. Kanye Smith is scheduled to appear in court on January 29.
