In the winter of 1984, a chilling series of events unfolded in the Tidewater region of Virginia, leaving a community gripped by fear. Among the victims of this terrifying spree was Carolyn Elizabeth Joyner Hedrick, a 44-year-old Caucasian woman. A resident of Hampton and a candy saleswoman by profession, her life was brutally cut short on February 2, 1984, in Newport News.
The horrifying discovery of her nude body in a church parking lot sent shockwaves through the area and marked another point in a string of violent crimes against women. Investigators quickly drew connections between Carolyn Hedrick's murder and four other slayings that had occurred within an 11-day period and a 30-mile radius, indicating the work of a serial offender. The first victim in this gruesome chain was a 45-year-old beauty shop operator, killed on January 23, 1984.
The perpetrator, Syvasky Lafayette Poyner, was later apprehended. During the investigation, Poyner confessed to the robbery, sexual assault, and murder of Carolyn Hedrick. He admitted to specifically targeting women, believing them to be more easily intimidated. While small amounts of cash were taken in some of the incidents, law enforcement did not believe robbery was the primary motive behind the attacks. Poyner's confession brought a resolution to the terrifying crime spree that had plagued the Tidewater community.
Following his confession and subsequent trial, Syvasky Poyner was convicted of the murder of Carolyn Hedrick. He was sentenced to death for his crimes. On March 18, 1993, Poyner was executed in Virginia's electric chair, bringing an end to the tragic case that had left a lasting scar on the community.
