On what should have been a somber afternoon of remembrance, a gathering of family and friends outside the Fifth Baptist Church in Richmond, Virginia, turned into a scene of chaos and violence. Kwaivon Dejesus, a 36-year-old Hispanic/Latino male, was fatally shot on the steps of the church on October 29, 2025, during a repast meant to honor a loved one. The tragic event unfolded around 4:30 p.m. in the 1400 block of West Cary Street, where attendees were sharing a meal and taking photographs. An argument broke out amongst those gathered, escalating with terrifying speed into gunfire.
Dejesus was struck multiple times in the back. He was quickly transported to a nearby hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead. Witnesses described a frantic scene as the celebratory and mournful atmosphere was shattered by the violent altercation. In the immediate aftermath, Richmond Police cordoned off the church steps, with forensics teams collecting multiple cartridge casings and a K-9 unit canvassing the area for evidence.
The investigation into the homicide moved swiftly. Within days, authorities announced that they had strong leads and were focusing on a suspect. The Richmond Police Department later identified 19-year-old Kordell Wall of Richmond as the individual responsible for the shooting. Investigators believe the violence stemmed from a verbal dispute between Wall and Dejesus that spiraled out of control.
In early November 2025, a grand jury indicted Kordell Wall on charges of murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Following the indictment, Wall was arrested and charged, bringing a measure of progress to a case that had so violently disrupted a time of mourning. The police continued to ask for anyone with further information about the incident to come forward as the legal process against the suspect began.
