In the fall of 2025, the life of 18-year-old Keyontae Young, a Black / African American male, was tragically cut short. On the evening of Monday, October 6th, a series of violent events unfolded in Marengo County, Alabama, that would leave a community in mourning. Young, a student at Thomasville High School, was fatally wounded during what authorities described as a shootout between two rival groups.
The gun battle erupted in multiple locations, shattering the peace of the quiet, rural county.
The investigation into the senseless violence moved swiftly. The Clarke County Sheriff's Department, assisting the Marengo County Sheriff's Office, announced that six individuals were taken into custody in connection with the fatal shooting. Among them, two men, 20-year-old Jarvis Packer and 20-year-old Alante Lewis, were charged with murder. Four other individuals were also charged with shooting into an occupied building. Authorities have characterized the incident as being rooted in gang activity.
