Joseph Powell, a 17-year-old Black male, was shot on the evening of October 9, 2025, in Pittsburgh’s Hill District and died a short time later at a local hospital. Police were dispatched at about 8:50 p.m. to the 2300–2400 block of Wylie Avenue after a ShotSpotter alert registered approximately 20 rounds. First responders found Powell outdoors with gunshot wounds to the chest and leg, initiated lifesaving measures including an emergency whole-blood transfusion in the field, and rushed him
to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead around 10 p.m. He lived in the Beechview neighborhood.
The shooting rattled the Middle Hill corridor, where neighbors described a burst of rapid gunfire that drew a heavy police presence. Investigators documented the scene along Wylie Avenue under flashing lights while SWAT units helped secure the area and search for those responsible. Another person, a 22-year-old man, had been shot in the leg during the same incident and was treated after being located at the scene.
Authorities moved quickly to gather witness statements and surveillance footage. Two people were detained at the scene and taken in for questioning as detectives worked to establish what led to the gunfire and who pulled the trigger. As of the following morning, the Allegheny County Medical Examiner had formally identified the victim as Joseph Powell, 17, of Beechview, and the investigation remained active under the Violent Crime Unit. No arrests had been announced and no suspects had been formally charged at that time.
