In the late hours of October 10, 2025, the joyous atmosphere of a homecoming celebration in downtown Leland, Mississippi, was shattered by gunfire, and Oreshama Johnson, a 41-year-old Black male, was among the first to fall. The annual block party, a tradition following the high school's football game, turned into a scene of chaos and panic as shots rang out near the intersection of North Main and Fourth Street around midnight. Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene, one of several victims in what would become a mass shooting.
The burst of violence was sudden and widespread, leaving a chaotic crime scene that spanned several downtown blocks. In the immediate aftermath, as sirens wailed and people scrambled for safety, it was clear the toll was high. Johnson, along with three others, did not survive to reach a hospital. In the days that followed, the number of fatalities from the shooting would climb to seven, with at least 16 people suffering from gunshot wounds and others injured in the stampede to escape. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and the FBI were quickly called in to assist the Leland Police Department, signaling the severity of the incident.
The investigation into the tragic death of Oreshama Johnson and the other victims soon led to a series of arrests. Authorities have indicated that the shooting was not a random act of violence but stemmed from a dispute among several individuals. Within days, several suspects were taken into custody. Among those facing capital murder charges are Teviyon L. Powell, 29, William Bryant, 29, Morgan Lattimore, 25, and Terrogernal S. Martin, 33. Another individual, Latoya A. Powell, 44, has been charged with attempted murder. As the investigation continued, the total number of arrests in connection with the shooting rose to nine, with some facing capital murder charges while others were held on related offenses. The FBI has also sought the public's help, asking for any available photos or videos from that night to help identify all those involved.
