In the small Delta town of Leland, Mississippi, a night of celebration turned into a scene of tragedy, claiming the life of 19-year-old Calvin 'Lil Calvin' Plant. A Black male, Plant was among the victims of a mass shooting that erupted downtown on the night of October 10, 2025, as community members reveled in homecoming festivities after a high school football game.
The festive atmosphere of the annual block party was shattered when gunfire broke out, reportedly sparked by a disagreement among several individuals. The chaos that ensued left a devastating toll, with Plant and several others losing their lives, and more than a dozen people injured. The incident, which occurred around midnight at the intersection of Fourth Street and North Main Street, became one of the deadliest mass shootings in Mississippi's recent history. In the aftermath, the community was left reeling, with social media footage capturing the horrific scenes of the frantic crowd and the victims lying in the street. A family member described Plant as a funny and respectful person, the baby of his family and his father's only child, who will be greatly missed.
In the days that followed, a multi-agency investigation involving local law enforcement, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, and the FBI led to a number of arrests. Several suspects were taken into custody and faced serious charges. Among them, Teviyon L. Powell, 29, William Bryant, 29, Morgan Lattimore, 25, and Terrogernal S. Martin, 33, were charged with capital murder. Another individual, Latoya A. Powell, 44, was charged with attempted murder. As the investigation continued, the number of arrests grew, with at least nine individuals taken into custody in connection with the shooting. The FBI also sought the public's help, creating a digital media tips website to gather photos and videos from the incident to ensure all those responsible were brought to justice.
