Amos Brantley Jr., an 18-year-old Black male, tragically lost his life on October 11, 2025, a victim of a mass shooting that occurred in Leland, Mississippi. The incident unfolded around midnight near Fourth Street and North Main Street, where a large crowd had gathered for a block party to celebrate the local high school's homecoming. The celebratory atmosphere was shattered by the eruption of gunfire, which is believed to have stemmed from a disagreement among several individuals. When the shooting ceased, multiple people were left dead and numerous others were wounded. Brantley was among those critically injured and was transported to a hospital for treatment. Sadly, he succumbed to his injuries later that day.
The mass shooting claimed the lives of six other individuals: Oreshama Johnson, 41; Calvin 'Lil Calvin' Plant, 19; Shelbyona Powell, 25; Kaslyn Johnson, 18; JaMichael Jones, 34; and another victim who passed away later, bringing the death toll to seven. In the wake of the violence, local law enforcement, with the assistance of the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and the FBI, launched a comprehensive investigation to bring those responsible to justice. The investigation led to a series of arrests in the days and weeks that followed.
Authorities have publicly identified several suspects who are now facing serious charges for their alleged involvement in the deadly shooting. Among those arrested are Teviyon L. Powell, 29, William Bryant, 29, and Morgan Lattimore, 25, all of whom have been charged with capital murder. Another suspect, Terrogernal S. Martin, 33, also faces a capital murder charge and was held on a $1 million cash bond. Additionally, Latoya A. Powell, 44, was arrested and charged with attempted murder. By the end of the following week, the total number of individuals arrested in connection with the attack had risen to nine as the investigation continued. The community of Leland, deeply affected by this tragedy, has come together to mourn the loss of Amos Brantley Jr. and the other victims, holding memorials and pressing for accountability for this senseless act of violence.
