On the evening of October 11, 2025, a shooting on the campus of Alcorn State University in Lorman, Mississippi, claimed the life of 29-year-old Brekyra Fisher, a Black female from Vicksburg. The incident, which also left two other individuals wounded, occurred near the Industrial Technology Building at approximately 6:30 p.m. during the university's homecoming weekend. Responding officers discovered three victims with gunshot wounds.
Fisher was pronounced dead at the scene by the Claiborne County Coroner.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Alcorn State University officials issued a campus-wide shelter-in-place alert as law enforcement secured the area. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation took the lead in the ensuing investigation, gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses to piece together the events that led to the tragic loss of life. The university community and residents of Vicksburg were left in mourning over what was described as a senseless act of violence.
Within days of the shooting, the investigation led to an arrest. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation announced that 26-year-old Taevion Doss had been taken into custody. Doss was subsequently charged with murder, two counts of aggravated assault, and possession of a weapon on school property. Following his arrest, he was booked into the Jefferson County Jail. Officials have indicated that the investigation remains ongoing, and further information may be released as the case progresses through the legal system.
