In the cool autumn evening of Sunday, October 12, 2025, the life of 30-year-old Simon Getachew, a male of Ethiopian descent, was tragically cut short on a residential street in Southeast Washington, D.C. At approximately 10:18 p.m., officers from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Seventh District were dispatched to the 3800 block of 9th Street, Southeast, following reports of a shooting.
Upon their arrival, they discovered Getachew suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.
Emergency medical personnel from D.C. Fire and EMS were called to the scene, but their efforts were in vain. Getachew showed no signs of life and was pronounced dead at the location. Originally from Northwest D.C., Getachew was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and was remembered by loved ones for his vibrant spirit. His sudden and violent death sent ripples of grief through his community, with friends and family recalling him as a cherished individual whose life was senselessly taken.
The Metropolitan Police Department quickly launched a homicide investigation into Getachew's death. As of the days following the incident, no arrests had been made, and authorities had not released any information regarding a potential suspect or suspects. Investigators were actively gathering evidence and seeking information from the public to piece together the events that led to the fatal shooting. In an effort to generate leads, the police department offered a reward of up to $25,000 for any information that would lead to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for this crime. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to seek justice for Simon Getachew and his grieving family.
