In the spring of 2014, a violent altercation in Southeast Washington, D.C., left a local man dead and another facing a murder charge. On the evening of May 13, police responded to a call for an aggravated assault in the 4400 block of C Street SE. Upon arrival, they discovered 36-year-old Elike Rahmon Richardson lying in the street, suffering from multiple stab wounds. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
An autopsy later confirmed that the cause of death was multiple sharp force injuries and the manner of death was ruled a homicide.
The investigation into Richardson's death moved forward, and a little less than a month later, on June 11, 2014, an arrest was made. Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch took 28-year-old Allen Thomas, also of Southeast D.C., into custody. Thomas was subsequently charged with second-degree murder while armed in connection with Richardson's stabbing.
As the case proceeded to court, details of the moments leading up to the fatal encounter began to emerge. The narrative presented by the suspect offered a motive rooted in defense. According to charging documents, Thomas told police that his actions were in defense of his mother. However, prosecutors painted a different picture, arguing that Thomas had 'willingly' and 'intentionally' engaged in the confrontation that resulted in Richardson's death. In an August 2014 hearing, a judge found probable cause to continue holding Thomas in custody, allowing the case against him to move forward.
