Abdul-Jalil Burnette, a 28-year-old Black man, was shot late on the morning of October 15, 2025, at The Village/Wellons Village Shopping Center area along North Miami Boulevard in east Durham. Officers were called just before 9:40 a.m. and found him wounded near the shops by Little Caesars; he was taken to a hospital, where he died. Family and loved ones described the loss as devastating, noting the quiet routine of the weekday morning shattered by gunfire near a bus stop at the busy
intersection of Holloway Street and North Miami Boulevard.
In the days after the killing, police said the shooter fled before officers arrived, and investigators worked to piece together what happened. Reporting later indicated the confrontation may have begun as an argument over a cellphone before escalating into violence.
On October 24, authorities announced an arrest. Khalil Hosch was taken into custody and charged with murder in connection with Burnette’s death, bringing a measure of clarity to a case that had shaken a community already grappling with loss. The arrest tied back to the Oct. 15 shooting at the shopping center, where detectives had concentrated their efforts since the morning of the crime.
The tragedy arrived amid a particularly painful season for Burnette’s family. Local coverage noted that his younger brother, Suliman, had been killed in a separate August shooting, a compounding grief that underscored the toll of gun violence in Durham as the year wore on. Community tributes and memorial pages marked Abdul-Jalil’s name and date alongside others lost, while relatives appealed for justice and remembrance.
