In the autumn of 2025, the life of 14-year-old Demario Faulkner, a male student at Plantersville Middle School, was tragically cut short in a burst of violence. On the evening of October 16th, Tupelo Police were called to the Nathaniel Place Apartments, the former Barley Courts Apartment Complex, following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered a chaotic scene where one young life had been extinguished and another individual was left injured.
The Lee County Coroner later identified the deceased as Demario Faulkner. His body was subsequently sent to the state crime lab for an autopsy to officially determine the cause of death.
The investigation into the shooting moved swiftly, and within a day, two suspects were in custody. Tupelo police charged Kevin Cook with first-degree murder in connection with Demario's death. A second individual, Trayvon Smith, was also arrested and charged with being an accessory to the crime. Investigators believe the shooting was the culmination of a dispute between two groups that had escalated with fatal consequences. During a bond hearing, a detective testified that following a physical altercation where Cook was slashed across the face, he pursued Demario and shot him twice in the back.
