Lakendrick “KK” Roby, a 44-year-old Black/African American man, was killed late on the night of October 19, 2025, during a burst of violence on Milwaukee’s north side that prosecutors later alleged was carried out by the same gunman. Roby was sitting in a black Audi in the 4600 block of North 31st Street, near Courtland and Glendale avenues, when he was shot. His killing occurred roughly an hour after two other people had been fatally shot less than half a mile away.
At approximately 10:17 p.m., a woman living nearby was upstairs in her home when she heard a single gunshot. A few seconds later, she heard four more shots and dropped to the floor with her son. Police were dispatched to 4656 North 31st Street at about 10:26 p.m. after a 911 caller reported an unresponsive person sitting in the driver’s seat of a black Audi. Officers found Roby inside the vehicle, pulled him from the car and began CPR. Milwaukee Fire Department personnel continued lifesaving efforts, but Roby was pronounced dead at approximately 10:50 p.m. An autopsy conducted by the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office determined that he died from multiple perforating gunshot wounds to the back.
Investigators recovered five spent 9mm cartridge casings from the Audi. Four were found inside the vehicle and a fifth was discovered on its roof, corresponding with the nearby witness’s account of hearing five shots. Detectives also obtained surveillance footage from a residence on North 31st Street. Although the recording was black and white and showed the shooting from a distance, investigators said it captured two people near the Audi before both moved from the house or sidewalk area toward the driver’s side of the car. After the shooting, the suspected gunman was seen running across the street and then south toward West Glendale Avenue. His black pants, patterned sweatshirt and patterned shoes were described as consistent with clothing seen on the suspect in the earlier double homicide.
The earlier violence had unfolded at approximately 9:20 p.m. near North 27th Street and West Atkinson Avenue, where Marcus Smith and Sandra Lee were killed. Surveillance footage from that scene showed a gunman near Smith before Smith fell, followed by the gunman chasing Lee while pointing a firearm toward her and firing as she ran. Witnesses identified the person depicted in the surveillance images as Michael D. Williams. Eight spent 9mm casings were recovered at that scene. Although early police reports treated Roby’s killing and the earlier double homicide as separate incidents, the subsequent criminal investigation connected them. A Milwaukee Police Department firearms specialist conducted a preliminary examination of the eight casings from the first scene and the five recovered where Roby was killed and concluded that the two groups were consistent with having been fired from the same firearm. The casings were then slated for additional examination by the Wisconsin State Crime Laboratory.
Williams was taken into custody after officers went to an apartment building at 2901 West Atkinson Avenue while searching for the suspect in the earlier shootings. Police encountered him leaving through a rear door near the alley. According to the criminal complaint, officers noticed a strong odor of bleach on him, and Williams allegedly remarked while being arrested that he had “did the city a favor.” A subsequent search of the building uncovered an open container of bleach and a black shirt in a bathtub that appeared to have been soaked in bleach. Investigators reported finding Williams’ fingerprint on the bleach container. Multicolored Puma shoes resembling those visible in surveillance footage were later recovered from a basement storage locker, and investigators reported what appeared to be blood on them.
Another element of the investigation placed Williams in the immediate vicinity of Roby’s killing. A relative of Williams told detectives that he lived with other family members at a house on North 31st Street and said Williams had recently been threatening family members. The Audi in which Roby was found was parked directly in front of that relative’s residence. The relative also told investigators that Williams had been experiencing mental-health and drug-abuse problems and had made statements claiming that God had told him to kill members of his family. Authorities did not, however, publicly establish that Roby was a relative or identify a clear personal motive for why Roby was targeted. Roby’s loved ones likewise said they did not know why Williams allegedly chose any of the victims.
Prosecutors charged Michael D. Williams with three counts of first-degree intentional homicide, one for each of the deaths of Roby, Smith and Lee. Each count is a Class A felony carrying a potential sentence of life imprisonment. During Williams’ initial court appearance, a Milwaukee County court commissioner set his cash bond at $1 million. Prosecutors pointed to the surveillance evidence and ballistic connection between the two shooting scenes as significant parts of their case.
On November 4, 2025, Williams pleaded not guilty to the charges and was bound over for trial. He remained jailed on the $1 million cash bond and was scheduled to return to court later that month. For Roby’s family and friends, the case was about far more than the evidence left behind at two crime scenes. At a vigil after his death, relatives and friends remembered “KK” as someone who readily helped people around him and whose actions demonstrated how deeply he cared about those he considered family. One cousin described him as the kind of person who would give someone the shirt off his back, while another loved one recalled how protective and devoted he was toward those close to him. His death ultimately became the third homicide prosecutors attributed to a single night of violence that had begun only blocks away and, according to the charges, ended with Roby being shot repeatedly while sitting inside his car.
