In the quiet community of Ida, Arkansas, on the evening of October 20, 2025, a family dispute escalated into a tragedy that claimed the life of 32-year-old Austin Cannon. Cleburne County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a call about a shooting at a residence in the 3000 block of Heber Springs Road North at approximately 7:07 p.m. Upon their arrival, they discovered Austin Cannon's body outside the home, bearing multiple gunshot wounds.
At the scene, deputies were met by the victim's older
brother, 42-year-old Dustin Cannon, who was waiting in the driveway with his hands up and surrendered to the authorities. Dustin, a teacher at Bald Knob High School, allegedly admitted to the shooting. He informed investigators that the altercation began after his brother, Austin, had threatened to harm his wife and daughter. According to the affidavit, Dustin claimed that when Austin raised his fist as if to strike him, he began shooting.
The investigation revealed the intensity of the encounter. Dustin Cannon allegedly emptied a. 40-caliber handgun, which held 21 rounds, into his brother. An affidavit stated that Austin was first shot while on the back porch and then several more times after he had fallen. Investigators recovered 18 spent shell casings at the scene. A woman who witnessed the shooting was also interviewed by detectives.
Following the on-scene investigation and interviews, Dustin Cannon was arrested and charged with one count of first-degree murder. He was subsequently booked into the Cleburne County Detention Center, where he is being held on a $1 million bond. In the wake of the incident, the Bald Knob School District placed Dustin Cannon on administrative leave after he self-reported the off-campus shooting. The school district confirmed that no students or other staff were involved and that they were cooperating with the ongoing law enforcement investigation.
