On the afternoon of May 23, 2025, Phillip Ogiemwonyi, 35, boarded a METRO bus in southwest Houston as the day ripened toward 2:30 p.m. An argument flared near the back of the bus and spilled toward the door at the 2100–2200 block of West Bellfort Avenue, just off Kirby. In the chaos that followed, witnesses told police the assailant produced a handgun, struck Phillip with it, and a shot rang out.
Phillip staggered onto the sidewalk where first responders found him gravely wounded; he was rushed to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead. Surveillance cameras on the bus captured the confrontation and flight of the shooter, providing investigators with crucial images in the hours that followed.
Phillip Ogiemwonyi of Houston died that Friday in the city where he was born and raised, his passing later noted in funeral notices that fixed the date and place with the finality of an epitaph.
Detectives released images from the bus and, by May 29, identified a suspect: 22-year-old Carltonio Jackson, charged with murder in the 179th State District Court and initially sought by HPD. One day later, after an updated bulletin naming Phillip Ogiemwonyi, 35, as the victim and locating the crime at 2200 West Bellfort, HPD SWAT officers moved in, arrested Jackson without incident, and booked him into the Harris County Jail. Investigators stated that the dispute on the bus preceded the gunfire outside; what the two men argued about remained unclear.
