In the quiet streets of Casper, Wyoming, a tragic story unfolded that cut short the life of 30-year-old Brandon Arguello Lopez, a Hispanic male. On the evening of February 1, 2024, police responded to a call about an unconscious man and discovered Lopez lying on the ground in the 1500 block of West 15th Street with a gunshot wound to his head. Emergency responders rushed him to a local hospital, but his injury was too severe. Lopez succumbed to his wounds in the early hours of February 2, 2024.
The Natrona County Coroner's Office later confirmed the cause of death as a homicide.
The investigation into the shooting revealed a narrative of a drug deal that had taken a fatal turn. Authorities identified 26-year-old Rajion Lee Vu as the primary suspect in Lopez's death. According to court testimony, Vu had arranged to sell marijuana to Lopez. Vu's girlfriend, Angelina Smith, who drove him to the meeting, stated that Lopez seemed agitated after getting into their vehicle, claiming he had a gun and intended to shoot them. She recounted that both men exited the car, and shortly after, she heard three gunshots. Lopez was found shot in the back, with the bullet traveling through his spinal column and lodging in his brain. He was discovered lying on top of a box containing individually wrapped packages of marijuana. A toxicology report later indicated the presence of amphetamines in Lopez's system.
In the aftermath of the investigation, Rajion Lee Vu was arrested and faced legal proceedings. Prosecutors argued that Vu's actions were born out of anger over a robbery involving a few hundred dollars' worth of marijuana. The defense, however, contended that Vu was reacting to what he perceived as an imminent threat. Ultimately, Vu was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to 12 to 18 years in prison for his role in the death of Brandon Arguello Lopez. Vu's girlfriend, Angelina Smith, was also charged with conspiracy to deliver marijuana. The case also led to the seizure of a significant amount of money, nearly half a million dollars, from a residence linked to Vu, which authorities believed to be connected to drug-related activities.
