Eventually, Yoan Santiesteban was arrested and charged in connection with several murders in Albuquerque in May 2017, including the
death of Chavez-Valdez. Santiesteban pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder in the killings of Julio Chavez-Valdez and another victim, Samir Al-Aboudy. This plea came after he was also convicted for the murder of another individual, Matthew Severinghaus. Santiesteban was sentenced to life in prison, plus an additional 68 years for his crimes.
