In a tragic sequence of events on May 24, 2025, Tayler Gennalee Maraj, a 24-year-old Black female, lost her life in what authorities have described as a murder-suicide. The incident began to unfold in broad daylight at approximately 11:40 a.m. outside a Spinx convenience store on Northeast Main Street in Mauldin, South Carolina. It was there that Tayler was confronted by Nathan Orlando Cureton, 38, of Greenville.
Armed with a gun, Cureton forced Maraj into her blue Subaru Impreza, an abduction that was later confirmed by surveillance footage from the scene.
Law enforcement was quickly alerted and began tracking the vehicle as it traveled north on Interstate 85. The situation escalated tragically as the car neared Piedmont in the neighboring Anderson County. While on the interstate, near mile marker 39, Cureton shot Tayler in the head. He continued to drive for a short distance before turning the gun on himself, taking his own life. The vehicle eventually came to a stop on the shoulder of the interstate. First responders arrived to a grim scene.
Tayler Gennalee Maraj was found gravely wounded and was immediately transported to a nearby hospital for medical attention. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead. The Anderson County Coroner's Office later ruled her death a homicide. Nathan Orlando Cureton was pronounced dead at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and his death was ruled a suicide.
In the aftermath of the harrowing event, investigators from both the Mauldin Police Department and the Anderson County Sheriff's Office worked to piece together the timeline and motive. Detectives indicated that Maraj and Cureton were acquainted with one another, though the specific nature of their relationship remained under investigation in the days that followed. Given that the sole suspect in Tayler's murder was deceased, no arrests were made in the case. The investigation focused on executing search warrants and analyzing evidence to understand the circumstances that led to the violent and public tragedy that unfolded along the interstate.
