On the morning of September 8, 2025, Fort Worth police were called to an apartment complex in the Ridgmar area, in the 6500 block of Tomstock Drive, where they found Keith Charles Carter, 60, a male who was Black/African American, on a staircase with a gunshot wound to his upper body; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators said an initial altercation preceded the shooting: Carter and a witness had been involved in a verbal argument that turned physical when an unknown
assailant opened fire and fled before officers arrived. Police did not immediately release the names of those involved as they sought the shooter and processed evidence.
In the weeks that followed, authorities announced an arrest in the case. By late September, 23-year-old DeJon Spencer had been taken into custody and charged with murder in connection with Carter’s September 8 killing at the Tomstock Drive complex; officials did not provide a public motive at the time of the arrest. Court proceedings were pending.
Carter’s death reverberated among relatives and friends who gathered later that month to mourn him. A funeral service and celebration of life were held on September 27, 2025, at Galatian Missionary Baptist Church in Fort Worth, with interment at Cedar Hill Memorial Park, and obituary notices invited condolences from the community.
