In the quiet neighborhood of Fair Oaks, Virginia, the life of a 30-year-old Korean American woman, Jennifer Kim, was tragically cut short on the afternoon of September 26, 2025. What was supposed to be a normal Friday quickly turned into a scene of unforeseen horror inside a residence on Derring Lane.
The incident unfolded when Richard Huynh, 31, was on the third floor of the home, securing a firearm in a gun box. In a tragic turn of events, the weapon discharged.
The bullet pierced through the floor, traveling into the second level of the house where it struck Jennifer Kim. Upon realizing what had happened, Huynh immediately rushed downstairs to render first aid to Kim, who was identified by police as his girlfriend.
Emergency services were called to the scene around 3:35 p.m., where they found Jennifer Kim with a gunshot wound. First responders, including police officers and fire and rescue personnel, continued life-saving measures before she was transported to a local hospital. Despite their efforts, her injuries proved fatal, and she was pronounced dead.
Following an investigation into the circumstances of the shooting, authorities arrested Richard Huynh. He was taken to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center and charged with the unlawful discharge of a firearm in a building. Huynh was held without bond. Court records indicated that a preliminary hearing for his case was scheduled for December 23. As the investigation stood, no other suspects were being sought in connection with the fatal incident.
