In a quiet neighborhood in Yorktown, Virginia, the lives of a long-married elderly couple came to a tragic end in what authorities have described as a murder-suicide. On July 1, 2025, 88-year-old Cosby Dean was found deceased in her home on Thornrose Drive. An investigation by the York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office revealed that she had died from a gunshot wound.

Responding to a call from concerned relatives, deputies discovered Cosby Dean and her 90-year-old husband, William Dean, inside their residence. The preliminary investigation indicated that William Dean had shot his wife before turning the gun on himself. Authorities believe they had been deceased for approximately five hours before their bodies were found.

The investigation suggested a heart-wrenching motive behind the tragedy. Cosby Dean had been suffering from dementia, and it is believed that her husband's actions were a result of seeing her in a deteriorating condition. The sheriff's office has referred to the incident as a 'mercy killing.'

The case is considered closed as the suspect, William Dean, is also deceased. The couple had reportedly lived in the Grafton area of Yorktown for many years. A celebration of life was later held for both William and Cosby Dean at Menchville Baptist Church in Newport News.
