In the early evening of July 7th, 19-year-old Jy'Querious Catoe, a male, was fatally wounded in a shooting outside a convenience store in Rock Hill, South Carolina. The incident occurred at approximately 10 p.m. at Adam's Grocery on South Wilson Street. Catoe was sitting in the passenger side of a vehicle when gunfire erupted. He was struck at least twice in the head and rushed to Piedmont Medical Center for his injuries.
He ultimately succumbed to his wounds and passed away on July 10th.
The events leading to the shooting began inside the store when a companion of Catoe's reportedly saw two individuals and turned to leave out of fear. As Catoe's companion attempted to get into the car where Catoe was waiting, the two suspects opened fire. While the intended target escaped harm, the bullets struck Catoe as he sat in the passenger seat. Surveillance footage from the store captured the incident, which police later described as 'calculated and merciless.'
Following the shooting, an investigation led to the identification of two suspects. A 16-year-old male was apprehended on July 9. The second suspect, 19-year-old A'montae Kevion Markise White, turned himself in to the Rock Hill Police Department on July 10. Both individuals face charges of murder, attempted murder, and two counts of possession of a firearm during a crime of violence.
A'montae White was denied bond and is being held at the York County jail while he awaits trial. The 16-year-old suspect, who had a pending gun charge at the time of the shooting, is in the custody of the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice. Prosecutors have indicated their intent to try the juvenile as an adult. If convicted of murder as an adult, the minimum sentence is 30 years to life in prison. The motive for the shooting has not been publicly released as the investigation continues.
