In the spring of 2025, the life of 16-year-old Jayden Reid was tragically cut short in Rock Hill, South Carolina. A junior at Rock Hill High School, Jayden was known for his passion for schoolwork, consistently making the honor roll. He was described as smart and level-headed, with an interest in fashion and a desire to become an entrepreneur. He enjoyed spending time at home with his siblings, with whom he shared a strong bond.
On the evening of Tuesday, April 22, 2025, what began as a
gathering of young people showing off their cars and playing with water guns in a high school parking lot escalated into a fatal confrontation. An argument that started there, reportedly after a BB gun shattered a car window, moved to a QuikTrip gas station on South Cherry Road. Just before 11:30 p.m., amidst the chaotic scene, Jayden Reid was shot in the torso. He was rushed to Piedmont Medical Center, but his injuries proved to be too severe, and he passed away shortly after arriving.
The investigation quickly led police to 17-year-old Carnell Isaiah Mike, who was identified as the shooter. Authorities arrested Mike and charged him as an adult with murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime, and possession of a firearm by a person under 18. In a heart-wrenching twist, it was revealed that Jayden and Carnell were friends. Jayden's mother, Timeka Fladger, expressed her belief that her son was an innocent bystander, struck by a stray bullet during an altercation between Mike and another individual. She lamented the senselessness of the gun violence that took her son's life.
In November 2025, Carnell Mike pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter. During the court proceedings, it was detailed that Mike had been in an argument and was knocked into some bushes when the gun he was carrying discharged, fatally wounding Jayden. Considering he had no prior criminal record, Mike was sentenced as a youthful offender to a term of one to six years in prison. The parents of Carnell Mike were also arrested for attempting to help him evade the police. The tragic incident left a permanent void in the hearts of Jayden's family and friends and served as a somber reminder of the devastating consequences of youth violence.
