In the late hours of a Saturday night in Nashville, a dispute simmering with anger boiled over into a tragedy that would end the life of 50-year-old Shereca M. Waters, a Black/African American woman. The evening of August 30, 2025, found Waters outside a residence at 87 Fain Street in the J.C. Napier community. An argument with another woman escalated, the spoken words of anger giving way to a physical confrontation.
The altercation took a fatal turn around 11:30 p.m.
when the other woman involved in the fight, later identified as Nerika N. Patton, allegedly drew a handgun. According to police, Waters had punched Patton, and in response, Patton fired her weapon, striking Waters. In the immediate aftermath, the shooter fled the scene, leaving Waters gravely wounded. Emergency responders arrived to provide aid, and she was rushed to Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Despite the efforts to save her, Shereca M. Waters succumbed to her injuries and died in the early hours of Sunday, August 31, 2025.
Homicide detectives with the Metro Nashville Police Department quickly began pursuing leads to identify and locate the person responsible for Waters' death. Their investigation led them to 42-year-old Nerika N. Patton. On the Tuesday following the shooting, detectives located and arrested Patton on South 4th Street. She was subsequently charged with criminal homicide and gun possession by a convicted felon. Investigators reported that Patton admitted to throwing the handgun into the Cumberland River, an action she took due to a prior felony conviction for a robbery in 2008. Following her arrest, Patton was held without bond.
