In a tragic turn of events, 19-year-old Janiyah Batey, a female resident of Nashville, Tennessee, lost her life in July 2025 following a violent encounter. The incident, which unfolded in the parking lot of the Buffalo Trail Apartments on Dickerson Pike, began as an attempted robbery and quickly escalated into a fatal exchange of gunfire.
On the night of June 30, 2025, Batey was confronted by four individuals who intended to rob her.
During the ensuing altercation, shots were fired by both Batey and her assailants. In the exchange, Batey was critically injured. Despite her injuries, she managed to drive away from the scene, her car eventually crashing at a nearby Shell gas station. Emergency services transported her to Skyline Medical Center in extremely critical condition. Tragically, Janiyah Batey succumbed to her injuries and passed away on July 2, 2025.
The investigation into the shooting led to the identification of four suspects. One of the alleged robbers, 16-year-old Demario Anderson, was found deceased at the scene, having been fatally wounded during the shootout. It is believed that Batey fired the shot that killed Anderson.
Authorities moved swiftly to apprehend the remaining suspects. Martavious Luster, 16, was the first to be taken into custody on June 30 and was subsequently charged with criminal homicide. Shortly after, on July 7, a second suspect, 16-year-old Adarian Graham, was arrested and also charged with criminal homicide. The third and final suspect, 15-year-old Demondre Mayfield, was arrested on July 18 and faced the same charge. Luster later admitted to approaching Batey while armed and wearing a ski mask. The investigation revealed that the four teenagers had planned to meet in the apartment complex parking lot with the intention of robbing Batey.
