Officers responding around 3:30 a.m. found him with a gunshot wound; he died at the scene. Early that morning, police believed two men were breaking into vehicles at the complex when the confrontation and shooting happened, and witnesses described one suspect in a Hellstar hoodie and another
light-skinned Black male with short twists in his hair. The location within Liberty Square on Dornoch Drive was later confirmed by property listings and local reporting that tied the block and complex together.
In the days after the killing, the investigation focused on a string of vehicle break-ins coinciding with the shooting window between midnight and 5 a.m., and detectives urged residents and businesses nearby to check surveillance footage. Community updates reiterated the time, place, and nature of the crime while emphasizing that the victim was pronounced dead where he fell. Memorial pages and funeral notices identified him by his full name and age and anchored the date and city of his death.
On July 11, 2025, detectives announced an arrest: Kam’Ron Jahquez Tolson, 18, of the Fayetteville/Raeford area, was charged with first-degree murder and discharging a weapon into an occupied property, along with five counts of breaking and entering a motor vehicle, felony possession of stolen goods, and felony conspiracy tied to the same night’s auto break-ins. Authorities said he was taken into custody with assistance from Hoke County Probation/Parole and held at the Cumberland County Detention Center without bond, while the investigation remained active. Subsequent reporting, citing case records, alleged that in the days after the shooting the accused tried to sell an iPad and a handgun believed to have been used in the crime.
