Avion Amelle Dingle, a 15-year-old Black male from Charlotte, was shot late on the night of June 26, 2025, inside an apartment complex on Merrick Street near North Tryon. Multiple 911 calls drew officers to the scene around 11:30 p.m., where he was found with fatal gunshot wounds after trying to flee down a second-floor hallway. He collapsed at the end of the corridor as bullets scarred the walls, a violent scene that unfolded while several other people, including children ages 3 to 14 and a
30-year-old woman, were present in the residence. He died at the scene, and word of his death spread quickly through the community and obituary notices in the days that followed.
Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Homicide Unit opened a case that night and, following weeks of investigation, announced the arrest of a 15-year-old juvenile on July 10, 2025, charging him with murder. Later in the month, after developing additional leads, CMPD identified a second suspect; on July 29, officers with the Violent Criminal Apprehension Team arrested a 16-year-old juvenile and added charges of conspiracy to commit murder and shooting into an occupied dwelling to a murder count. Because the suspects are juveniles, police did not release their names, and the case remains active as detectives continue to piece together what led to the gunfire that ended Avion’s life.
