Ar’mon Covington, 26, a Black male, stepped into the pre-dawn quiet of a BP station on Grant Street in Akron to stop a man who was harassing women in the parking lot. It was about 4:15–4:18 a.m. on July 6, 2025, when the confrontation turned deadly. Multiple shots rang out; officers arrived to find Covington mortally wounded, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The Akron Police later said he had tried to protect the women from the aggressor moments before he was killed.
Detectives quickly identified a suspect: 41-year-old Demario McCall. Police said McCall had been bothering women outside the station when Covington intervened; the gunman then fired on Covington and walked away, fleeing in a vehicle from the BP at 778 Grant Street. Authorities warned the public that McCall was armed and dangerous while the Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force joined the search.
For weeks, the case galvanized Akron—tributes described Covington as a Good Samaritan whose final act was to defend strangers. Tips poured in as the manhunt stretched through July, with federal and local agencies coordinating to locate the suspect. The Gun Violence Archive recorded the killing and named Covington as the victim, marking the time and location while the investigation continued to focus on McCall.
On August 31, 2025, U.S. Marshals arrested McCall in Akron without incident, recovering a loaded firearm. Officials confirmed he was wanted on charges including murder, having weapons under disability, and carrying concealed weapons. The Marshals’ release noted that a warrant had been issued on July 8, and that McCall had been featured as “Fugitive of the Week” before his capture. With the arrest, authorities said the alleged harasser who shot Covington after the intervention was finally in custody, moving the case into the courts.
