On July 5, 2025, in east Toledo, 20-year-old Amir Thomas-Clair, a Black male, was found inside a crashed vehicle on the 1700 block of Nevada Avenue after gunfire shattered the night around 12:20 a.m. Officers discovered that Amir Thomas-Clair had been shot at least once; medics rushed him to Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center, where the 20-year-old male died.
The Lucas County Coroner ruled the death a homicide, identifying a gunshot wound to the back as the cause and listing the place of injury as 1711 Nevada Avenue.
He wasn't alone in the car. A second victim from the same vehicle was also struck by gunfire and was listed in critical condition, while a third occupant escaped being hit. The violence unfolded minutes after another shooting less than a mile away, part of a grim holiday stretch that left multiple families reeling. Toledo officials later outlined how the Nevada Avenue scene was discovered within minutes of officers finding a separate 20-year-old victim near Platt and 1st; in the Nevada crash, police again found Amir Thomas-Clair wounded inside the vehicle and later confirmed his death at the hospital.
