In the early morning hours of August 2, 2025, a dispute at a Lawrenceville gas station in Pittsburgh escalated into a fatal shooting that claimed the life of 26-year-old Davon Smith-Mahdi. The incident unfolded at the A-Plus Sunoco on Butler Street, where Smith-Mahdi and his brother encountered the night clerk, 22-year-old Randell Antonio Tate.
The confrontation reportedly stemmed from a past issue between Tate and Smith-Mahdi's brother, Trevon Smiley.
Smiley had entered the store seeking an apology from Tate for allegedly spreading stories about him. After a verbal exchange, Smiley left the store and returned with his brother, Davon Smith-Mahdi. Surveillance footage from inside the convenience store captured the conversation escalating. At one point, Smith-Mahdi and his brother followed Tate into the small, bulletproof cashier's booth.
It was inside this confined space that Tate, feeling threatened, drew a handgun and began firing at the two men. The brothers attempted to flee the store, but Tate continued to shoot, even after Smith-Mahdi had fallen to the ground and was trying to crawl away. Smith-Mahdi was struck four times in the chest and back, while his brother sustained a gunshot wound to the foot. Both men were taken to a nearby hospital by private transport, but Davon Smith-Mahdi succumbed to his injuries approximately 10 hours later.
Pittsburgh police arrested Randell Tate later that day and charged him with criminal homicide and aggravated assault. During questioning, Tate admitted to the shooting but claimed he feared for his safety, although he also acknowledged that he never saw a weapon on either of the victims. Tate was denied bail and is being held at the Allegheny County Jail awaiting trial. The family of Davon Smith-Mahdi has since filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the gas station's owner and Sunoco, alleging negligence in their hiring and security practices.
