In the summer of 2024, a tragic event unfolded in Memphis, Tennessee, leading to the death of 66-year-old Gary Newman. On Monday, July 1, 2024, Newman was fatally shot at his residence while heroically attempting to protect his long-term partner's niece, 22-year-old Antonyia Stewart. The incident stemmed from a domestic dispute between Stewart and her ex-boyfriend, 28-year-old Jaylen McCollins.
According to family members, the tragic chain of events began when Stewart attempted to end
her three-year relationship with McCollins. An argument ensued, which quickly escalated. Surveillance footage from outside the home on Newfound Gap Road captured McCollins arguing with Stewart before he allegedly brandished a firearm. In a selfless act of protection, Newman intervened and was shot and killed by McCollins. Stewart was also tragically shot and killed during the altercation.
Following the double homicide, the Shelby County Sheriff's Office launched a manhunt for McCollins, who fled the scene. He was considered armed and dangerous. For over a month, the families of Newman and Stewart pleaded with the public for information on his whereabouts and directly appealed to McCollins to turn himself in. The search came to an end in August 2024 when deputies with the Shelby County Sheriff's Office apprehended McCollins in downtown Memphis. He was subsequently arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder and unlawful possession of a weapon. The families of both victims expressed relief at his capture and stated their intention to be present at all of his court proceedings.
