In the wake of the shooting, Albany police investigated the violent incident that resulted in Mims' death and injuries to three other people. The investigation led to the arrest of two teenage suspects. One, a 15-year-old, was identified as the individual who allegedly fired the handgun that struck Mims. Initially charged with attempted murder, the charges against him were upgraded to murder by the Albany County District Attorney's office following Mims' death. The second suspect, also a teenager, was accused of firing a flare gun into a building on Madison Avenue during the incident, causing a fire. That teen faced charges including attempted murder and arson. Due to their ages, the names of the suspects were not publicly released by authorities. The 15-year-old accused of firing the fatal shot was arraigned on the upgraded murder charge and entered a plea of not guilty.
