A beloved figure in his community, 32-year-old Jaceil Banks, a male resident of the Bronx, was known for his good energy and sense of humor. Friends and family affectionately called him 'the neighborhood's nephew.' On the evening of Saturday, August 23, 2025, a community back-to-school basketball game was being held at Haffen Park in the Baychester section of the Bronx.
The event, meant to be a positive gathering for local children and families, turned into a scene of chaos and violence.
Shortly before 7:30 p.m., gunfire erupted at the park, with witnesses describing the sound as being like a machine gun. In the midst of the mayhem, multiple people were struck by bullets. When police arrived at the scene near Burke and Wickham avenues, they found Jaceil Banks with a gunshot wound to his chest. He was rushed to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi, but he was pronounced dead by hospital staff.
The shooting resulted in several other injuries. A 17-year-old girl from Hartford, Connecticut, who was visiting her grandmother, was shot in the head and left in critical condition. A 31-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman were both shot in the back, and a 42-year-old man's arm was grazed by a bullet; they were all reported to be in stable condition. The day after the shooting, the New York City Police Department announced the arrest of four suspects. The individuals, ranging in age from 17 to 25, are facing multiple charges, including murder, gang assault, and criminal possession of a weapon. In the wake of the tragedy, a memorial for Jaceil Banks grew outside the Gun Hill Houses where he grew up, as the community mourned his sudden and violent death.
