On the evening of June 1, 2025, Juvonie Eugene Minor Jr., a 31-year-old Black male, was fatally injured during a violent incident at his residence in the Key Coalition neighborhood of Kansas City, Missouri. Emergency responders were dispatched to the 2900 block of Wabash Avenue just before 8:30 p.m. following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers discovered the victim lying inside the doorway of the home, suffering from critical gunshot wounds.
He was immediately transported to a local hospital for emergency treatment, but medical personnel were unable to save him, and he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.
The investigation revealed that the violence stemmed from a domestic dispute involving a separate couple. According to witness statements provided to the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office, a female witness had been involved in an argument with her boyfriend, Shawn L. Allen Jr., earlier that evening. Following the disagreement, she left Allen and traveled to the victim's residence on Wabash Avenue, reportedly to purchase marijuana and play with his puppies. While she was inside the home, Allen repeatedly called her phone and allegedly threatened to 'shoot up' the residence.
Surveillance footage and witness accounts detailed the moments leading up to the homicide. A silver Ford Fusion, later identified as belonging to the suspect, was seen arriving at the scene. Witnesses reported that Allen approached the house, aggressively shouting, 'What did you say?' before firing four rounds directly through the front door. The female witness inside the home fled to her vehicle and hid as the shooter retreated to his car and fled the scene. The gunfire struck Minor, who had been near the entryway.
Detectives utilized cell phone data and video surveillance to track Shawn L. Allen Jr., locating him and his vehicle shortly after the incident. During a subsequent police interview, Allen admitted to owning the silver Ford Fusion and possessing a firearm as a convicted felon, but he denied responsibility for the murder. A search of his vehicle revealed a handgun with an extended magazine on the floorboard. Authorities noted that Allen had a prior conviction for assault and unlawful possession of a firearm from 2023.
On June 4, 2025, the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office formally charged 26-year-old Shawn L. Allen Jr. in connection with the death. He faces multiple felonies, including second-degree murder, two counts of armed criminal action, unlawful possession of a firearm, and discharging a firearm at or from a motor vehicle. Prosecutors requested that he be held without bond due to the nature of the alleged crimes and the danger posed to the public. As of the initial filings, he remained in custody awaiting further court proceedings.
