In May 2025, a violent confrontation in Kansas City, Missouri, claimed the life of 25-year-old Zackery Matthews. The incident took place in the afternoon outside a residence near East 73rd Street and South Benton Avenue, where Matthews had been performing construction work. He was accompanied by his girlfriend at the site, having been there for approximately two hours before the situation unfolded.
The atmosphere turned volatile when a man identified as 26-year-old Zechariah
Hoskins-Ellis arrived at the location in a truck hauling a trailer loaded with all-terrain vehicles. According to investigative reports, Matthews initially exited the home to speak with the arrival but returned inside shortly after, indicating that the man had made a rude comment. When the couple eventually left the house to retrieve tools, a verbal argument reportedly ensued between Matthews and Hoskins-Ellis, with both men exchanging curse words.
The dispute escalated rapidly when Hoskins-Ellis allegedly retrieved a black Glock handgun and fired at Matthews, striking him in the head. Following the shooting, a witness described seeing an associate of the suspect searching the ground near Matthews's vehicle, presumably for a shell casing, before the parties fled. Police officers responded to the scene around 4:14 p.m. on May 16, discovering the wounded construction worker on the ground. He was rushed to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries but succumbed to his wounds days later on May 19.
Authorities subsequently arrested Zechariah Hoskins-Ellis in connection with the homicide. Prosecutors charged him with second-degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon, and two counts of armed criminal action. At the time of the incident, the suspect was reportedly on probation for a prior firearm-related offense. A judge set his bond at $500,000 as the legal proceedings began to address the fatal shooting that marked one of dozens of homicides in the city that year.
