Sanjay Samuel, a 13-year-old boy, was on his way to school on the morning of Monday, September 22, when his life was tragically cut short in a senseless act of violence in Queens, NY. He was walking in front of a Dunkin' Donuts on Linden Boulevard in Cambria Heights at approximately 8:15 a.m. when he stopped to talk with some friends. It was then that a 16-year-old male from South Jamaica approached him on a scooter, leading to an argument between the two teenagers.
The confrontation
quickly escalated as the older teen pulled a loaded semi-automatic firearm from his sweatshirt pocket and struck Sanjay in the face with it. In a moment of self-defense, Sanjay punched his attacker. The 16-year-old then aimed the gun at Sanjay's head and fired a single shot, striking him. The shooter fled the scene on his scooter, leaving Sanjay lying on the pavement with a critical head wound.
Emergency services rushed Sanjay to Cohen Children's Medical Center, but his injuries were too severe. He remained in a coma on life support with no signs of brain activity for two days before he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on Wednesday, September 24. In the wake of this tragedy, his family made the compassionate decision to donate his organs, an act that saved the lives of five other individuals.
Following an intense manhunt, during which the police released a surveillance image of the suspect, the 16-year-old shooter surrendered to the 105th Precinct, accompanied by an attorney. He was subsequently arrested and charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon. A Queens grand jury later indicted the teenager on charges of murder in the second degree and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon. He was ordered held without bail and faces the possibility of a lengthy prison sentence.
