In a tragic turn of events on June 6, 2025, the life of 16-year-old Xyere Brooks was cut short in Camden, New Jersey. A sophomore and promising football player at KIPP High School, Brooks was at a friend's apartment on the 1500 block of Thorne Street when he sustained a fatal gunshot wound. He was rushed to Cooper University Hospital but succumbed to his injuries a couple of hours later.
Brooks was a gifted athlete who was already being looked at by major football programs like Rutgers and Syracuse.
The incident occurred while several juveniles were present in the apartment. According to Brooks' brother, the shooting was accidental. He stated that a female friend pointed the gun at Xyere's head, not believing it would discharge. The investigation into the matter revealed that a 16-year-old male had brought the firearm into the residence.
In connection with the death of Xyere Brooks, two juveniles were subsequently charged. A 12-year-old girl from Wilmington, Delaware, was charged with manslaughter and unlawful possession of a weapon for recklessly discharging the firearm that killed Brooks. Additionally, the 16-year-old boy who brought the gun to the apartment was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon. Following the charges, both juveniles surrendered to the authorities and were later released with conditions pending a future court date.
