On a summer night in Camden, New Jersey, the sound of gunshots shattered the evening calm in the area of South 4th and Royden Streets. When the violence ceased on July 22, 2023, two men were found suffering from gunshot wounds. One of these men was 47-year-old Jose Bonilla, a Hispanic male from Camden.
Both Mr. Bonilla and a 38-year-old man, also from Camden, were rushed to Cooper University Hospital for medical treatment.
Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Jose Bonilla succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 10:40 p.m. that same night. The condition of the second victim, who survived the incident, has not been publicly disclosed.
The Camden County Prosecutor's Office and the Camden County Police Department have launched a joint investigation into the shooting. The circumstances that led to the gunfire and a potential motive remain unclear to the public. To date, no arrests have been announced, and no suspects have been publicly identified in connection with the death of Jose Bonilla.
