In the quiet evening of June 29, 2025, the life of 44-year-old Shalamar Brown was tragically cut short in East Orange, New Jersey. A Housing Specialist known for her fun-loving and vibrant personality, she was a friend to many, always ready with a smile and a joke. Friends and family remember her as the life of the party, a woman who brought joy to those around her.

On that fateful Sunday, at approximately 8:30 p.m., police responded to a call of a shooting at 15 N. 16th Street. There, they found Shalamar Brown critically injured, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds to her upper chest, abdomen, and thigh. She was rushed to University Hospital, but despite the efforts of medical professionals, she succumbed to her injuries during surgery.
The investigation quickly zeroed in on a suspect: her 29-year-old boyfriend, Darian Ficklin of Orange. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Ficklin fled the state, leading law enforcement on an hour-long chase into Delaware. His attempt to evade justice was ultimately unsuccessful, as he was apprehended by the Delaware State Police. Ficklin was subsequently arrested and charged with the murder of the woman he was in a relationship with, bringing a swift, yet somber, development to a case that had suddenly and violently shattered the peace of an East Orange neighborhood.
