In the early morning hours of September 3, 2017, a sense of tragedy befell the city of East Orange, New Jersey. Breanna Williams, a 23-year-old African American woman from the neighboring city of Orange, found her life cut short in an act of violence. Williams was seated in a car on Chelsea Place when she was struck by gunfire around 1:40 a.m.
Emergency services were quick to respond, and Williams was rushed to University Hospital in Newark. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at 2:19 a.m. The incident left the community in shock and searching for answers.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office, in conjunction with the East Orange Police Department, immediately launched an investigation into the fatal shooting.
