On a spring evening in 1992, 16-year-old Jamillah Jones was making her way home in East Orange, New Jersey. Having been out with friends, she decided to head back as night began to fall. Tragically, she would never make it home. Just six blocks from her house, she was attacked by Jerome Dennis. Dennis, a paroled rapist, subjected the teenager to a brutal assault, raping and stabbing her to death before callously discarding her body off a pedestrian overpass.
Jamillah was the fifth and
final victim in a string of murders committed by Dennis in Essex County. Her body was discovered on April 10, 1992, along with the bodies of three other women, all found within blocks of each other along the Garden State Parkway. The discovery of the victims, who had been killed days apart, sent a wave of fear through the community.
The investigation quickly led law enforcement to Jerome Dennis. He was arrested on April 13, 1992, and subsequently charged with a litany of felonies, including five counts of murder, rape, robbery, assault, and kidnapping. Initially, Dennis pleaded not guilty, but he later confessed to the murders. In 1993, Jerome Dennis pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life in prison for his horrific crimes.
