Mark Hortman, 58, a White man from the Minneapolis area, was killed in the early hours of June 14, 2025, when violence meant for Minnesota’s elected leaders crashed through the front door of his family’s life. It began before dawn in the northern suburbs, with a figure who looked like law enforcement arriving in the quiet and using the authority of a uniform to get close—close enough that a normal knock became a doorway into terror. 
Investigators say the attacker moved like someone following a plan, not a whim. Before the Hortman home was hit, state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were shot at their residence in nearby Champlin after the assailant allegedly posed as a police officer at the door. Authorities described the sequence as targeted and politically motivated, the kind of attack designed not just to harm, but to send a message—one that left the Hoffmans badly wounded and fighting to survive. 
At the Hortmans’ home in Brooklyn Park, police arriving to check on the household encountered a scene that looked wrong in the way nightmares do: what appeared to be a police vehicle outside, and a man dressed in police gear. According to prosecutors’ accounts, the assailant wore a disguise—reported as a realistic silicone mask and wig—and, when confronted, opened fire. In the chaos, Mark Hortman was shot and killed, and his wife, Minnesota House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman, was also killed inside the home. Investigators later tied the same suspect to the shootings of the Hoffmans and described additional attempted visits to other officials’ homes that night where no one answered. 
As daylight came, the suburbs became a grid of sirens, roadblocks, and warnings. Authorities identified the suspect as Vance Luther Boelter, and a massive manhunt unfolded across the region as residents were urged to be cautious of anyone claiming to be a lone officer at the door. Reports described writings and lists connected to the suspect—material that investigators said pointed toward political targets—and the search stretched into a tense, multi-day pursuit before his capture near Green Isle, Minnesota. 
Boelter was arrested and has been prosecuted in both federal and state systems, with the federal case taking the lead. A federal grand jury indicted him on charges tied to stalking and the murders of Melissa and Mark Hortman, the stalking and shootings of John and Yvette Hoffman, and the attempted shooting of the Hoffmans’ daughter, Hope; federal prosecutors have said the charges carry the possibility of life in prison or the death penalty. In state court, Hennepin County prosecutors also pursued a grand jury indictment that includes first-degree premeditated murder charges and additional counts that include felony animal cruelty related to the family dog being shot during the attack. 
Boelter has pleaded not guilty to the federal charges, and court proceedings have emphasized both the scale of evidence and the high stakes, including the still-unresolved decision about whether federal prosecutors will seek the death penalty. As of February 20, 2026, reporting on the latest federal court hearing indicated prosecutors had not yet made a final decision on capital punishment. Public reporting has not identified any additional suspects charged in connection with the killings, and authorities have treated Boelter as the primary accused attacker.
